What Are Dogs Known For? | Why are Dogs So Familiar To Us?

The dog is a domesticated descendant of the wolf. The dog is descended from an ancient, extinct species of wolf, and the modern wolf is the dog's closest living relative. Dogs are the first species to be domesticated by hunter-gatherers 15,000 years ago, before the development of agriculture. Because of their deep and ancient association with humans, dogs have expanded into large numbers of domestic individuals and have acquired the ability to thrive on vegetarian as well as starchy diets that would be inadequate for other canids.

Dogs are known for many things but being man's best friend has to be one of them. They have been "man's best friend" for centuries and have been trained for many jobs that help humans.

Dogs are classified into different groups based on their personalities

Here are the seven groups:

  • Hound
  • Sports/Hunting
  • Non-Functional/Non-Working
  • The Toy
  • Working
  • Terrier

Each group of dogs has a specific role to fulfill. And, each breed has been and is still used today for their unique skills, although it has become more common to keep dogs as pets and companions rather than as useful animals or tools. Next, we will talk about what is known for each group of dogs.

Hound

This group is famous for its agility. The popular greyhound, originally used to catch small and fast prey, is now used for the sport of dog racing. You can see many photos showing this group chasing foxes while the owners ride on horseback.

Many breeds in this group often have quiet or reserved personalities. They are not as noisy and energetic as some other breeds. They have high stamina for the chase and have the stamina that not many people can keep up. They are independent, sometimes not paying attention to themselves.

Here are some more popular species of this group:

  • Dachshund (The Wiener Dog)
  • Bloodhound

These symptoms do not apply to all dogs as each dog is individual and may differ from others.

Terrier

Terriers were once known as hunting dogs. They were bred to catch small rodents in farms and homes. Breeds in this group are similar to Scottish terriers or rat terriers. This used to be the best pest control, although many of these are now just great pets, they don't necessarily do pest control work.

Dogs have been selectively bred for thousands of years for different behaviors, sensory abilities, and physical characteristics. Dog breeds vary widely in size, shape and color. They play many roles for humans, such as hunting, grazing, pulling loads, protection, assisting the police and military, assisting the disabled, healing and helping. Over thousands of years, dogs have become uniquely attuned to human behavior, and the human-dog bond has been the subject of frequent study. This influence on human society has earned it the title of "Man's Best Friend".
